In some poor regions of the world, sanitation facilities are not connected to sewage systems. Improper treatment of faeces leads to environmental contamination, diseases and impairs the quality of life. However, important foundations are lacking to change this situation in the long term.

In collaboration with the EAWAG Department of Sanitation and Water for Development, Clara Pedrini (ZHdK) and Ammandip Duggal (ETHZ) have developed the Maji Taka measuring instrument set, a system designed to provide valuable data for the research and development of new sanitary systems. The Faecal Sludge Measurement Instrument Set consists of a distance meter and a probe to determine faecal tank volumes. The set helps researchers to calculate the amount of faeces from a statistically relevant number of toilets. It thus creates the necessary basis for a region-specific design of efficient and sustainable treatment plants.
