The Design and Technology Lab is a joint venture between the Industrial Design Programme at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the Product Development Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). The Lab is a cross-university education and research platform dedicated to interdisciplinary innovation projects.

The Ooze product family combines sculptural character with intuitive climate control in interiors. The object communicates the current relative humidity of a room to the environment with the aid of biowood that reacts to moisture. If the slats close, it is too dry and water should be added to humidify the air.

The Ooze project is based on an active wood shingle developed at the ETHZ’s Institute for Building Materials. This makes use of the natural material properties by transforming wood shrinkage and swelling into an altered shape when moisture changes.

Simon Camenzind, Manuel Rossegger (both Bachelor, ZHdK) and Florian Künzli (Bachelor, ETHZ) explored the potential of biowoods in a broad-based conceptual phase and finally developed the passive humidifiers “Ooze Home” and “Ooze Office.” Particularly in the winter months, these make a decisive contribution to moisture regulation and thus to indoor well-being. At the same time they visualize the current relative humidity through the opening bi-wood lamellas and provide intuitive experience.
