The Design and Technology Lab is a joint venture between the Industrial Design Programme at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the Product Development Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). The Lab is a cross-university education and research platform dedicated to interdisciplinary innovation projects.

W2-N is a user-friendly laboratory instrument that fundamentally changes the way standard chemical reactions are handled. Instead of time-consuming manual dosing, substances are pre-dosed and delivered in capsules. After being entered into the instrument, they are made to react.

The Design and Technology Lab is a joint venture between the Industrial Design Programme at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the Product Development Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). The Lab is a cross-university education and research platform dedicated to interdisciplinary innovation projects.

In drug development, N-heterocycles are synthesized to test new drugs.  Synthesis requires a lot of time because it involves many manual steps and is risky because laboratory technicians are required to handle toxic substances.

Stephan Nagel (Bachelor, ZHdK) and Jan Zimmermann (Master, ETHZ) designed the W2-N in cooperation with the ETH startup Synple Chem. W2-N is fully designed to meet the needs of the laboratory technician: its core features are an automated process, small floor space and intelligent product-user communication. Application time could thus be reduced from 8h to 0.5h.
